YOUTH NEWS
One of
the main events of my summer was taking a group of 3 youth from Grace to the
ABC District Youth Gathering “LOUD” from July 23rd to 26th
on the Kelowna UBC campus. Kyrsten Murray,
Hannah and Adam Stoddard and I travelled to and from the gathering on a 56
passenger Traxx motor coach with other youth and
leaders from Medicine Hat, Rocky Mountain House, Prince of Peace and Foothills
Lutheran churches. Are we listening to
God when he speaks to us quietly or ‘LOUD’ly? And how can we serve Him? Our Bible Studies, group sessions and
devotions centered around our RELATIONSHIP with
God. Besides our study of the WORD, we
had lots to eat at the cafeteria on campus, sang with a young band group from
St. John’s in Vernon, had time to make new friends, enjoyed ‘late night spots’
as well as outdoor games on campus one sunny afternoon, participated in a
‘servant event’ where we cleaned outside walls, walks, windows, and grounds of
an older Senior’s Residence, and got rained out of our highly anticipated Beach
Party on Okanagan Lake! There were many pictures of the gathering on
the LOUD website which is www.loudyouthgathering.ca,
and you might recognize a few faces, although I don’t know how long the
pictures will be posted. We came home
tired, but with new friends and a stronger faith. Everyone should go to a youth gathering at
least once in their lifetime – no matter how old you are!
Here
are some planned and hoped for this year:
-SEPTEMBER: Canmore youth
weekend – Sept. 25th-27th – need a parent volunteer
-OCTOBER: Geo-Caching (modern scavenger hunt) – need 1
GPS in front vehicle & parents to drive youth
-NOVEMBER: Help with Inn From the Cold by providing dinner
-Mission Impossible at the Church – follow
safety rules and do not use Sanctuary for games.
-Games night (could be Mission Impossible) & cookie
Baking on a Saturday – cookies to be served with coffee after service the next
day
-Christmas Party – possibly combined with carol singing &
hot chocolate with seniors next door in manor
-Movie & popcorn night – out or in
-Laser Tag
-Skiing/Snowboarding
-Swimming
-PaintBall
We
want to thank the congregation for their prayers of support. We also thank you for dropping off your cans
and bottles as a youth fund raiser. The
last car load I took in yielded $95.40!
If you plan to purchase an Entertainment Book ($40.00) or Student Union
Ticket Pack (SUTP) this year, please keep in mind that we will soon be selling
them to members and friends. Our fund raising helps defray the cost of activities we plan. For example, they pay for 1/3 of an event
which involves Bible Studies, such as the LOUD gathering and the Canmore weekend, with 1/3 coming from youth themselves, and
1/3 coming from the congregational budget.
If we plan a purely social event such as bowling or roller skating, our
fund raising covers half of that cost with the youth
paying the other half.
Again,
thank you for your support.
